About the Conference:
Leaders receive the best bounty from their hard work and dedication.  The treasure is making a difference in the work environment, the community, and at all levels of development.  The 2010 FES Leadership Conference will provide the tools, information, and connections for today’s (and tomorrow’s) leaders.

The 2010 Leadership Advisory Committee has set sail on a program guaranteed to prepare chapter leaders for success.  The two-day program is full of golden opportunities to reach the new leader, emerging leader and the seasoned. Don’t miss out on this adventure to Discover the Treasure of Leadership.

The Friday afternoon program begins with a motivational presentation by Nat Glover, former sheriff of Jacksonville and Assistant VP, University Relations & Public Affairs, University of North Florida.  The afternoon brings success stores from the 2009 ACE Award winners and Student Chapters of the Year. The evening treasures include a relaxing cocktail hour, dinner with our true treasures (family and friends), and Family Fun Activities on the beach.

Saturday morning kicks off with an overview of the essential FES desk reference, The FES Leadership Guide.  The Guide provides a detailed look at the structure of FES and the roles and responsibilities of the many volunteer opportunities.  We have expanded the roundtable breakouts to three, forty-five minute sessions.  The morning is wrapped up with the perspective of our seasoned leaders and final words from the president-elect and chairman.

We look forward to seeing you at the 2010 FES Leadership Conference.

Who Should Attend?
FES current and future leaders, chapter officers, members in line for chapter officer position, and anyone wishing to enhance their overall leadership skills, whether an Engineering Intern (EI), student of engineering or a Professional Engineer (PE). It is strongly encouraged that the incoming president or new officer positions at the chapter level attend the conference.

Keynote Speaker – Nathaniel Glover, Jr, former Jacksonville Sheriff
Nathaniel Glover, Jr. made history by being elected the first African American Sheriff in Florida in more than 100 years.  He served two terms and retired from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office in June 2003. His career has taken him down a strong path of leadership, training and mentoring students of all levels.  Sheriff Glover’s law enforcement career started as an investigator then promoted to Sergeant to head of the Police Hostage Negotiation Team and then served as the Director of Police Services. The ability to make decisions, lead staff, and departments during these roles was the key to their success.

His passion for the Jacksonville Community is very strong. During is first term in office, Sheriff Glover donated approximately $250,000 of his pension benefits to a college scholarship fund for deserving low-income children in the Jacksonville community.   In 1999, Sheriff Glover was awarded the FBI Director's Community Leadership Award.  He was honored for "his untiring efforts to combat crime through community involvement and to effect positive changes in the criminal justice system."  Sheriff Glover was chosen to participate in the White House Leadership Conference on Youth, Drug Use and Violence.  He has also received the outstanding alumnus awards from the University of North Florida, Edward Waters College and Leadership Jacksonville, Inc.

In November of 2006 Sheriff Glover was introduced as a special assistant to University of North Florida President John Delaney.  The Sheriff’s role at the University is to promote higher education, college recruitment, and drop-out prevention.  He also serves as a special envoy for higher education to Florida Community College at Jacksonville and Edward Waters College.  In partnership with FCCJ, Edward Waters College, and Jacksonville University, Sheriff Glover is championing a program entitled The Jacksonville Commitment.  This program’s primary goal is to identify, recruit, and retain low-income students and provide scholarship opportunities to attend any of the four Duval County higher education institutions.
