A Message From FES President David Keough, PE
Fellow FES members,
At the time of this writing, much of the country is in the grip of bitter cold, and even here in Florida, we have felt the effects of unusual temperature swings. These moments serve as a timely reminder that sound engineering design must always account for extremes—not just averages. Freeze protection, thermal expansion and contraction, and resilience to major temperature excursions are not “northern problems.” They are engineering realities. Whether we are designing water systems, transportation infrastructure, buildings, or energy facilities, durability under unexpected conditions is part of our professional responsibility to protect public health, safety, and welfare.
I am proud to report that our PE Legislative Days on January 21–22 were a tremendous success. FES members from across the state came together in Tallahassee to meet with lawmakers, share our expertise, and advocate for sound policy grounded in engineering principles. These face-to-face conversations matter. When legislators understand the role professional engineers play in safeguarding Florida’s communities, better decisions follow.
Our work, however, does not end when we leave the Capitol. The most effective advocacy happens year-round, back home in our districts. Building and maintaining relationships with senators and representatives outside of session — through local meetings, plant tours, community events, and professional engagement — ensures that when technical issues arise, lawmakers know who to call. Each of us serves as an ambassador for the profession.
As we move toward February, we’re reminded of the tradition of Groundhog Day. If folklore holds true and the groundhog does not see his shadow, perhaps we can look forward to an early end to this bitter cold. Regardless of what the groundhog predicts, Florida’s engineers will continue designing for whatever conditions come our way.
Thank you for your continued commitment to excellence and service.
Sincerely,
David Keough, PEÂ
President, Florida Engineering Society
