Executive Director

Are you an experienced executive prepared to assume multiple leadership roles and
influence Florida’s engineering community through professional development,
education, advocacy, and leadership? To help shape the future of these non-profit
organizations in Tallahassee, Florida, the American Council of Engineering Companies
of Florida (ACEC Florida) and the Florida Engineering Society (FES) are looking for a
creative Executive Director.

The Executive Director serves as the Chief Executive Officer, responsible for strategic
leadership, operational excellence, government advocacy, and member engagement. In
addition to working closely with ACEC National and regional partners, this person will
oversee employees and represent the organization to state and municipal agencies. In
addition to continuously monitoring, evaluating, and reacting to any legislation that can
negatively impact Member Firms or the professional engineering profession’s license
and practice, the Executive Director must have a thorough understanding of the
legislative process.

To people who are enthusiastic about the engineering profession, ideal candidates will
bring more than 15 years of executive leadership experience, a history of successful
fundraising and membership growth, a love of public policy, and a solid understanding
of association management and oversight.

Responsibilities include:

  • Collaborating with the FES and ACEC Florida Boards of Directors to support
    effective governance, strategic alignment and performance monitoring.
  • Provide strategic leadership, operational management and financial oversight to
    secure effective member engagement, successful external relations, and public
    policy results.
  • Ensure long-term sustainability, sound financial practices and alignment with the
    missions of FES and ACEC Florida.
  • Ensure compliance with all legal, fiscal, and ethical standards, upholding the
    integrity and accountability expected of leading non-profit organizations.
  • Develop a strategic plan to increase membership, expand programmatic impact,
    and ensure long-term financial sustainability.
    Implement and advance innovative strategies that amplify the association’s
    missions and position them for long-term impact in a rapidly evolving landscape.
  • Provide strategic oversight of day-to-day operations, ensuring the effective
    deployment of the association’s financial, human, and intellectual resources.
  • Foster a people-centered culture that prioritizes collaboration, professional
    development, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to excellence.
  • Empower and support staff by investing in their growth, encouraging cross-functional
    teamwork, and creating an environment where ideas and contributions
    are valued.
  • Lead by example to model transparency and accountability.
  • Drive key results in membership and fundraising by identifying and cultivating key
    strategies and tactics.
  • Expand the association’s community by strengthening connections with
    members, supporters, partners, and stakeholders across sectors.
  • Model exceptional communication and representational skills, reinforcing the
    association’s role as a highly respected, nonpartisan convener of engineering
    professionals.

Strategic Priorities and Outcomes
Success in this role will be demonstrated by:

  • Preserving and strengthening the association’s commitment to the individual
    engineering members and the engineering industry.
  • Increasing visibility through membership engagement, strategic partnerships, and
    public-facing thought leadership.
  • Driving results in membership growth and non-dues revenue by cultivating
    membership, partners, foundations, and public sources.
  • Champion ACEC Florida’s role as a critical stakeholder in FDOT policy,
    procurement, and planning decisions.

Candidate Profile

  • (15+) years of senior leadership experience, preferably in association
    management.
  • Prior C-suite experience with P&L oversight and board engagement.
  • Expertise in financial stewardship, membership growth, non-dues revenue, and
    revenue diversification.
  • Proven ability to lead, particularly with non-profit governance and regulatory
    frameworks.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.

Additional Details

  • Reports to the Boards of Directors.
  • Location: Tallahassee, Florida.
  • Compensation: Competitive, commensurate with experience.
  • Frequent statewide travel required visiting regions and chapters.
  • Attend National Association of Engineering Council Executives (NAECE)
    meetings, participating in the Organization’s leadership, as well as ACEC
    National Convention, Legislative Summit and Fall Conferences.
  • Establish a strong relationship with leadership and staff at FDOT.

Benefits

100 percent of the employee’s health and dental insurance is paid by FES and ACEC
Florida. Additionally, the cost of personal term life insurance and accidental death and
dismemberment insurance is also fully covered up to $50,000.00, and individual Long-
Term Disability Insurance. Retirement, pension plan and 401(k) plans are paid up to 5
percent of the employee compensation, plus an additional 3 percent in excess of the
integration level. Seven holidays are observed, as well as vacation based on length of
