In Memoriam: The Don Ditzenberger Florida Engineering Society Museum

Florida’s engineering community is mourning the loss of our friend and fellow engineer, Don Ditzenberger, PE. For more than a century, Florida’s Professional Engineers have been designing and shaping the future of our state, safeguarding the health, safety, and welfare of all Floridians. Few embodied that mission more fully than Don.

A lifelong champion of the profession, Don’s vision and dedication led to the creation of the Don Ditzenberger Florida Engineering Society Historical Museum, which preserves the skills and contributions of Florida’s engineers for generations to come.

Members of the Florida Engineering Society (FES), American Council of Engineering Companies of Florida (ACEC Florida), and the Florida Engineering Foundation (FEF) know well the depth of Don’s commitment to both the profession and the community he served.

Don spent a lifetime helping to shape Florida’s future. His professional journey began in 1969 when he received his PE license. That same year, he joined FES and remained active in the association for more than 50 years.

While living in Broward County, he served as an officer and chair for numerous FES local chapter committees. Don volunteered for the very first MATHCOUNTS® competition and stayed involved in this middle-school educational competition throughout his career. After relocating to Jacksonville, he joined and became active in the Northeast Florida FES Chapter, where he continued to support both chapters with the same dedication and passion.

As a recognition of his tremendous contributions and service to the engineering community, Don was awarded the FES Engineer of the Year honor in 1990, the FES Outstanding Service to the Engineering Profession award in 1995, and he was the first and only recipient of the FES Legends Award in 2012.

Perhaps his greatest contribution to the industry and the association was in 1991 when he became the first Historian for FES. His passion for capturing engineering history and specifically FES history drove him to author the article, “FES: The First 75 Years” in the FES Journal. He updated this article in 2016 when FES celebrated its centennial anniversary. Decades of dedication to preserving the history of engineering and FES led to the creation of the Don Ditzenberger Florida Engineering Society Historical Museum. Though not yet built, it will showcase not only the rich history of FES, ACEC Florida and the Florida Engineering Foundation but also will include Don’s extensive collection of mementos, celebrating the milestones and legacy of both engineering and FES.

On behalf of the FES and ACEC Florida engineering community, we extend our deepest and most sincere condolences to the Ditzenberger family, friends, and PEs across Florida whom he inspired.

To honor Don’s legacy, you may make a donation to the endowments in Don’s name at the University of North Florida: the Donald W. and Carol S. Ditzenberger Brooks College of Health Endowment and the Donald W. and Carol S. Ditzenberger Endowment supporting students in the Coastal and Port Engineering program.

The Don Ditzenberger Florida Engineering Society Historical Museum is dedicated to the past, present, and future Professional Engineers whose skills and knowledge perpetuate and sustain the health, safety, and welfare of all Floridians.

The Don Ditzenberger Florida Engineering Society Historical Museum will play a crucial role in teaching visitors about the history and importance of FES. Exhibits will offer interactive experiences for visitors to gain information and ideas that inspire and foster an appreciation for the history of FES and ACEC Florida.

After exploring the exhibits, visitors will:

  • Understand what FES, ACEC Florida, and FEF are, as well as the relationships they share; such as the Florida Engineering Leadership Institute (FELI).
  • Recognize important FES, ACEC Florida, and FEF historical events.
  • Realize the critical role FES and ACEC Florida have for the well-being of engineers and the Florida public.
  • Understand that FES is not only about engineering, but people. Have additional knowledge about the support FES offers.
